"K. Česonytė’s paintings are variations on Expressionist painting: characterized by a trembling touch, energetic brushstrokes, and expressive paint textures with which she often seems to 'sculpt' figures, objects, and landscape elements. In terms of genre, the scope of her work is quite traditional. Landscapes predominate, though the artist has also painted a series of still lifes, numerous urban scenes, and the occasional stylized portrait. Yet, other aspects of K. Česonytė’s painting align her less with classical modernist art and more with the imagery of the contemporary, media-saturated world. 'My tools are the computer and virtual space,' she says. The visual imagery in her paintings derives not from reality itself, but from a virtual—or secondary—reality. For this creative artist, however, that serves merely as a springboard or a starting signal that liberates both imagination and hand. In her work, this secondary reality—or a chance motif—and the artist’s imagination most often intertwine inseparably. Images suggested by modern media are transformed into authentic visions, deeply and sensitively experienced by the painter herself."

About this artwork+

The painting portrays a view of rooftops from an elevated perspective. Broad strokes in subdued hues of green, white, and gray dominate the canvas, creating a textured effect that captures the solid and sturdy character of the buildings. The perspective leads the viewer's eye down the center where the sharp angles of the rooftops converge, drawing attention to the architectural details of sloping surfaces and chimneys. Despite the overcast sky rendered in roiling shades of blue and green, there is a contrasting sense of calm stability in the layout of the structures. Small details like windows, outlined in select areas, add a human touch to the otherwise stark geometry. The overall mood is melancholic yet contemplative, reflecting perhaps the quietude of a secluded, tightly-knit neighborhood.
